Banks Laxon has always been philanthropic in nature. Having given to the RNZFB and other charities regularly over the years, he then came to the stage of his life where he could significantly increase his amount of charitable giving.

Banks looked for a charity that was New Zealand based, had a secure history, and one that he was confident that the money raised would be spent in a fiscally responsible manner.

"I have a strong empathy with blind people," he says. As a chemist, and one time owner of a pharmacy in Maraetai, Banks regularly came into contact with blind and partially sighted people as he dispensed their prescriptions. He saw first hand the difference a guide dog could make to a person's security and independence.

"When I came into the guide dog centre at Manurewa to see how I could make a difference," Banks says. "I sensed immediately that I was dealing with the people who do the work and who make the difference.

Banks was given a warm welcome at the guide dog centre and directed to the dedicated fundraising team at Awhina House where the work of guide dog services was explained, within the range of services the RNZFB's provides for blind and partially sighted New Zealanders.

"Having the opportunity to visit the breeding centre and meet the centre manager gave me the opportunity to learn more about the science behind the breeding. As well as meeting my latest sponsored pup – guide dog puppy Fay – before she embarks on her puppy development journey, it was great to see my second sponsored dog, Alice, as she came into the centre ready for mating."

"I recognise that not all of the dogs I sponsor achieve full guide dog status but through the relationship we have built with the Foundation I know that the money is not wasted. The RNZFB is careful to show their transparency with my money. The best thing of all though is when I see a guide dog out working, seeing how they work so well with their handler is amazing. It is truly independence in action."

Marshall Industries is a family owned roofing business based in Invercargill and they have been running Harness Race day events in Winton since 2005.

They have raised funds for our guide dog service through selling lucky hats with prizes on the day, running raffles and helicopter rides. The finale of the event is an auction of a roof which is provided by Marshall Industries.

As Peter Marshall has a love of dogs, the RNZFB was a good fit, Mr Marshall says. March 2010 has been the biggest year yet, where they raised $10,750 for the roof at the auction and $3,500 for their other activities

Mr Marshalls said “that we are proud to be associated with the RNZFB and we display in reception pictures of the dogs that they have sponsored. We challenge ourselves every year to do better than the last”.

To date Marshall Industries has sponsored guide dogs Marshall, Winton, Tai and Karma.
