Roger Marbeck and TIS

In 2004 the "Extra Touch" award was presented to Roger Marbeck by the Association of Blind Citizens New Zealand (ABC NZ) for keeping blind and vision-impaired New Zealanders up-to-date with what is happening in the music world. Every fortnight the owner of Marbeck's music stores personally records music updates on to the RNZFB's Telephone Information Service (TIS).

By dialing into TIS from any phone RNZFB members can listen to Roger's updates, leave a message for him or be put through to his store. A member of ABC NZ's National Executive, Clive Lansink, says they chose Roger as the recipient of this award because of the personal time and energy that he has put into his recordings for the past year-and-a-half. "Roger is the first businessman I've known to give his own time to read his newsletters on to TIS. He is offering a valuable service that members appreciate," said Clive, when he presented the award to Roger at a function held at the RNZFB. Roger says he enjoys recording the updates because he knows he is helping fellow music lovers keep up-to-date when it may otherwise be difficult for them. "It's really rewarding, I love getting their feedback and I'm honored to be receiving this award," says Roger.

Vision-impaired music fan Carolyn Peat says Roger's TIS recordings are great because they are easily accessible and inform her of new songs or artists she otherwise wouldn't know about. "I love music and because it is difficult for me to go into a music shop or pick up a magazine and read about music, Roger's updates keep me in the loop," says Carolyn.
