Library circulation
The Library circulates talking books in mailing containers designed for blind, deafblind and vision-impaired people to handle.
From its base in Parnell, the Library issues over 400,000 braille books, talking books, and audio magazines per year.
Books are sent to RNZFB members throughout New Zealand. The collection must cover all the same genres sighted people want to read. The demand for books in so many subject areas presents a challenge for a Library that has a small collection only 7,500 talking book titles and 8,000 braille titles. The cost of making accessible formats is the Library's chief constraint.
Those costs mean that only a small number of new titles can be added to the collection each year. The Library accepts and considers all recommendations from its borrowers. The final decision on which titles it will produce takes into account factors such as the currency and popularity of a title, subject areas that need better coverage in the Library, and the availability of the title as a commercial recording obtainable through public libraries and bookshops. Relationships with overseas talking book producers enable the Library to obtain titles they have produced.
