Accessible Journey report from the Human Rights Commission.
Submission to the Human Rights Commission. February 2005.
Asked to comment on the Commission's initial findings, the Foundation emphasised that:
- Public land transport must be accessible by design.
- Legal force will be required to ensure that transport systems are not discriminatory.
- The Total Mobility scheme needs to be standardised throughout New Zealand.
- Accessible information for consumers is required in taxis.
- Transport operator training in disability awareness is essential.
The Foundation applauds the notion of using Transfund funding to conduct research into how effective various intervention strategies would be in making New Zealand's public land transport systems more accessible. A best practice culture is fundamental to achieving that ideal.
