Sporting tips - athletics
If you are keen to get into athletics, it's crucial to get the right coaching or advice for the discipline you choose. This may mean familiarising yourself with the running track, discus circle or long jump pit, depending on your degree of vision impairment. You may need a reliable, trustworthy sighted guide, who is able to effectively communicate relevant information and if necessary provide the use of a guide rope. As an athlete, the 'guide rope' enables relative freedom, as you are not forced to clutch the arm of the guide.
If you are interested in taking up athletics then call your local athletics club, Parafed or RNZFB recreation advisor and they will be able to point you in the right direction. Your recreation advisor can also discuss the best way of using your existing vision and what factors you need to consider.
Designing your kitchen - dishwashers
Many members say that dishwasher drawers left open often cause injury.
One solution to this problem is the Fisher and Paykel Quantum Dishdrawer. When open, the dishdrawer has no sharp edges or corners, as these have been moulded to avoid injury. It is also the same size and shape as an ordinary kitchen drawer and therefore much more visible.
Other advantages for members include:
- Easy-to-use controls - three on the front panel and five more inside the front of the drawer - all of which 'beep' when pressed
- a flow-through detergent dispenser and easy-to-clean waste filter, with removable wire baskets for easy loading and cleaning.
Although a bit more expensive than conventional dishwashers it is very economic and great for small loads, especially if you live alone.

Knitting tip from a member
Christine Palmer from Nelson suggests using a circular knitting needle. These can be used for knitting 'flat' or in the round. Once mastered they are easy to use and you never drop your needle. For knitters who have arthritis in their hands and wrists, they are better than straight needles because the weight of the knitting falls into the lap.
