Fatima and the Queen of Tonga

In July Fatima Akehurst (Pacific Services) held a combined BAP and public education programme in Tonga at the Tongan Disabled People's and their Caregivers' conference hosted by the Queen of Tonga. About 50 people attended the workshop which focused on the connection between blindness and diabetes, what support is available in NZ and how the community can help. Fatima shared her experiences as a vision-impaired person and invited others to do the same. Sighted guide techniques were also shown. The workshop was the first of its kind in Tonga and participants, including the Queen, enjoyed the experience and gratefully thanked Fatima for raising their awareness. The Queen of Tonga has since offered to pay for Fatima's airfares to run further programmes as part of Tonga's 'Beating Diabetes Project'.

Services Delivery Project

Adrienne Henderson, Divisional Manager of Quality Assurance will lead a special project to address the waiting list for RNZFB services. The project will look at alternative ways of delivering services to members. It will also consider collaboration with low vision services and linkages to other services, particularly for the elderly (67% of our membership is over 65). Over the next 12-15 months two pilot studies will trial alternative service delivery options. One pilot will be in Dunedin, and the location for the second is yet to be decided.
