Start tuning up your instruments, put on your bowling shoes and bring out your sports gear, uncover your novels, theses and business plans. Dust off your paintbrushes, sculptures and pottery because the biggest event on the RNZFB's social calendar is nearly here. No it's not the Oscars, it's better than that, it's the Blind Achievers' Awards 2002!

If you have (or know someone who has) achieved a goal, whether it's the last step in a lifelong ambition or one giant step towards it then we want to hear all about it!!

We encourage you to take part in this year's Blind Achievers' Awards and look forward to seeing your entry in one of the following seven categories: Academic, Sport, Performing Arts, Arts, Literature, Business/Employment and People's Choice.

Category winners are invited to attend a star-studded function to be held on 6 December 2002 at Government House in Wellington. Dame Silvia Cartwright is hosting the event, with awards being presented by world-famous, blind mountaineer Erik Weihenmayer.

Erik Weihenmayer has achieved some amazing goals of his own - he was the first blind man to climb McKinley and has gone on to conquer the Seven Summits (the highest peak on each continent).

Born with retinoscheses and totally blind by the time he was thirteen, Erik's eye condition did not slow him down. He believes that no matter what challenges people may face, they can still find the courage to reach for their goals and have within them the grit, determination and ingenuity to transform their lives.

The Blind Achievers' Awards 2002 is your opportunity to shine. So, let us know about your successes and achievements over this past year and inspire others to follow their dreams.

Full details are included on the official entry form inserted in this issue of Outlook. Further copies are available on the website www.rnzfb.org.nz/events or by phoning 0800 24 33 33. Entries must be in by Friday 18 October 2002. - Good Luck!
