Adaptive Technology classes coming to a region near you

The Foundation is delighted that, thanks to support from the Community Partnership Fund, we are about to start on the long-promised expansion of our computer classes to cover areas outside Auckland and Wellington.

In 2008, the RNZFB will run a pilot programme of short courses in at least five locations in both the North and South Islands. This will reach many members who have missed out up to now.

"And this is just the start", says Neil Jarvis, Adaptive Technology Manager. "If the demand for the courses is as high as we believe it will be, we will have a strong case to take to external funders for more courses in more locations in future years."

We will also be expanding our distance learning opportunities. This will enable members with some existing computer skills to take part in courses from their own home.

"If all our plans come to fruition, they will even have the opportunity of taking part in a 'virtual classroom' where groups of members taking distance learning courses around the country can support each other, like students do in the actual classroom now," adds Neil.

Our outreach programme is possible due to the support of Vodafone, our lead partner in Adaptive Technology.

Announcements about the dates and locations of courses in 2008 will be made through the Adaptive Technology section of the Telephone Information Service (option 3, 2), and through other communication outlets. If you want to know more, or if you would like to find out whether classes will be available in your area, get in touch with Neil Jarvis on 0800 24 33 33.

How would computer classes benefit me?

There's a growing range of clever tools that we can use to ensure computers are accessible to members, including braille displays, CCTVs and screen readers. The benefits of getting to grips with computers and the internet include the ability to:

  • Read newspapers
  • Apply for jobs
  • Carry out online banking and shopping
  • Email friends and family
  • Keep track of household or business accounts by developing spreadsheets
  • Participate in your local community and in the democratic process
