Other inspirational people and Blind Week story angles:
Marathon Man Mike – When he is not teaching Adaptive
Technology skills to other blind and low-vision people, Mike is
training to run in November’s New York Marathon. He’s presently
battling through injury, and supported by a team that includes his
brother. Mike is also a major blogger - www.blindrunner.com
Internet talking books - Aileen, 80, devours 10 books every week
– talking books recorded by the RNZFB, which is celebrating 70 years of
talking books in NZ. The Foundation is also preparing to “go digital”,
with talking books likely to be coming down the internet.
Braille Music – Many blind New Zealand musicians, young and old,
rely on the Foundation to produce braille music. It takes years
to learn this skill, and there are only a handful of people in NZ who
can produce braille music. (Note: The Foundation produced over
120,000 pages of braille for members last year. And 2009 marks
the 200th anniversary of the birth of Louis Braille).
Bent Canes – Even though tens of thousands of New Zealanders
have used white canes over the decades, motorists can still be a
danger. Gary keeps his “banana cane” as a reminder of the last
time a car almost ran him over.
