One of the Best, Dot Beard
20 January 2012
We sadly announce that Dot Beard, RNZFB member and volunteer, passed away aged 82 on 13 January 2012. Dot was a remarkable lady who was not only an appreciated volunteer of the Foundation but also a valued friend by many. Dot herself had a visual impairment and was the first person in New Zealand to work with a guide dog.
Dot had many attributes, a confident public speaker to name one. On a regular basis Dot spoke at schools and service clubs to educate people about vision impairment and how a guide dog could help in tremendous ways. Despite of other possible commitments, Dot remained dedicated to the RNZFB and became involved with the Members Garden Club in Christchurch where she insisted that vision loss does not prevent members from continuing to enjoy gardens.
If that wasn't enough Dot would also take it upon herself to organize five monthly meetings on the pure basis that she loved to provide comfortable social occasions for members to enjoy themselves, make friends and build self confidence. Dot's generosity did not end with the RNZFB; she was also associated with other organisations such as the Christchurch Branch of Association of Blind Citizens and was a frequent visitor of the Christchurch Hospital Children's Ward.
We send huge condolences to her family and can safely say that Dot will never be forgotten for her tremendous contribution to the RNZFB.
