Tea with Tales

Auckland members have the chance to get together over a few books and cake at the 'Tea with Tales' events.

'Tea with Tales' is organised by our library in conjunction with the Parnell Library. Sighted volunteers read short passages of a book, and the group have the chance to chat about the latest books they've been reading.

These events will be run roughly once a month in Kinder House, on the corner of Ayr Street and Parnell Road, from 10 -11am.

2012 dates are:

  • 31 May
  • 28 June
  • 26 July
  • 30 August
  • 27 September
  • 25 October
  • 29 November

Please RSVP to the Library by phoning 09 355 6969.

On 26 April, we listened to extracts from the following books:

Waimarino County & other excursions by Martin Edmond CD51544

Rex read 3 extracts from this NZ book including a humorous account of growing up in Huntly. The author is brother of long time RNZFB narrator Frances and to Katherine, reporter for Country Calendar as well as the son of poet and writer Lauris Edmond

The Denniston rose by Jenny Pattrick CD56253

Set in the 1880s, Sarah highly recommended this dramatic historical read. Some of the members had already read the book and enjoyed it as well as its sequel Heart of Coal.

The 10 pm question by Kate De Goldi CD54553

First time narrator Emma had us laughing at the descriptions of the aunts in this book that appeals to be young adult and adults alike.

Sons for the return home by Albert Wendt CD55860

Pat remembers when this book was first published and the sensation it caused as the first book published by a Samoan writer. She recommends his other novels as well.

A long long way by Sebastian Barry

With ANZAC day fresh in our minds Esther shared this story of a young Irishman joining the Allied Forces in WW1. Told with Irish wit and humour the story moves between the battlefield and Ireland.
