Adaptive technology / computer short courses

Do you want to brush up on your computer skills, use adaptive technology software better, or learn a whole new computer program altogether?

When: 

There will be a total of 11 days of training over three weeks, from Tuesday 1 November through to Thursday 3 November, Monday 7 November through to Thursday 10 November, and Monday 14 November through to Thursday 17 November.

Class times will be 9:00am until 3:00pm with one hour for lunch between 12:00 and 1:00pm plus morning and afternoon tea breaks. 

Where: 

The training will be held at the Auckland Adaptive Technology Classroom, ground floor, Awhina House, 4 Maunsell Road, Parnell, Auckland.

Cost:

This training opportunity is available free of charge to RNZFB members.

What: 

Take the opportunity to learn for the first time or refresh your skills on those programs or features that you have been thinking about for ages.

Please note: Obviously we can't teach you all that there is to know about everything, but tell us what it is that you wish to cover and we will do our best to assist.

Topics:

Adaptive Technology: - How to use both the old and new features of your specific adaptive technology program of choice. This may include JAWS, MAGic, Zoomtext, Openbook etc.

General computer operation: - Getting around the computer including how to efficiently use the desktop, dialog boxes, menus and shortcut commands as well as file management concepts to locate, move, copy, remove and rename your files. Note: The classroom computers are now running the Windows 7 operating system along with Microsoft Office 2003 and Office 2010.

Email: - Reading, sending and storing email messages, opening and sending attachments and using contacts.

Microsoft Word: - From the basics of creating a simple letter to using more advanced formatting features.

Internet:- Learn how to surf the Web and access a world of information. You may want to learn how to use the Internet in general or how to best use a specific website such as Trade Me, NZ Herald, White Pages telephone directory, or your bank's website etc.

Excel: - Learn how to get around a spread sheet as well as how to use many of the features that make Excel such a powerful and useful program to do various tasks which may include storing information such as names and addresses or cataloguing your CD collection, through to calculating figures or keeping your accounts.

PowerPoint: - Learn how to read a PowerPoint presentation and how to create a basic slide show.

Creating websites: - Learn how to use HTML to make your own webpages and insert text, headings, links, pictures and more.

If you are interested in learning about a topic that we have not listed, then let us know and we can discuss it further.

Attendees must:

1. Be members of the RNZFB.

2. Be able to make your way to and from Awhina House independently and at your own expense.

3. Have existing keyboarding skills and good computer keyboard layout knowledge.

4. Provide your own food for lunch and breaks etc. Tea and coffee making facilities are available. 

It is advised that anyone who will be using a screen reading program such as JAWS should bring their own set of headphones to minimize classroom disturbance.
