Sound and Touch September 2011

In this issue:

Digital Talking Book project

Digital CD players have now been rolled out to over 1900 borrowers who are using them to play DAISY books on CD. We hope to have our next shipment soon so we can provide more borrowers with a digital library service.

As more of you are moving on to this new service we would like to remind you that the books and magazines on these CDs are still protected by copyright and each CD is only for your use as a member of the RNZFB. They should not be lent to anyone else and should always be returned to the Library after you have listened to them.

For those of you who have not yet received a new digital CD player please make sure you have signed the new acceptance and access forms recently sent to you. If you have not received this form please contact the Library.

By the end of 2011 we hope to have all of our borrowers on the new digital service and the Library will no longer be producing or sending out talking books and magazines on cassette. Therefore it is important to send your signed acceptance and access forms back to the Library as soon as possible.

Selecting DAISY CD books

For borrowers who have a new player and are receiving CDs, you will find a selection of CD books in the middle section of this issue of Sound and Touch and on the Telephone Information Service (TIS) menu 1 9. Alternatively you can order a list of books on a particular subject which can be sent to you via email.

Contact the Library for further information.

DAISY Player tips

To keep the battery in your DAISY player in good working order run the battery down once a month and recharge it overnight.

If your player is broken please contact the Library as you need to be sent a courier ticket for its return. Do not take the player to the local regional office. The player can only be repaired by the Library’s trained technicians and must only be returned to the Library by courier.

When you are ready to return your old Talking Book machine place the machine in the box that your new machine arrived in. In that box there is an “Articles for the Blind” free post sticker with the Library’s address on. Take the box to the local post shop for posting.

The Library has available on talking book cassette and DAISY audio CD the Multiple Sclerosis Society’s series of ten booklets for MS sufferers and their families. Contact the Library to place your request.

A question of care; what, when and how

Care Publications have produced five regionally specific handbooks for New Zealanders that give a broad overview of issues that older people and their families need to be aware of. Available entitlements, support and care services are explained along with the steps needed to access these services. These regional handbooks are available on talking book cassette and DAISY audio CD. Contact the Library for your copy.

Cancer Society health brochures

The Library has available DAISY audio CD copies of the following health brochures: Bowel cancer and bowel function, Emotions and cancer; Breast cancer in men and Cancer in the family. Contact the Library to order these or any of the other brochures on cancer.

Farewell and thank you

The Library says farewell and thank you to our library newsline narrator Tony Ricketts. Tony started with the Foundation as a talking book narrator, narrating over 60 books for the library, before becoming one of our taking book producers. Since moving to Katikati Tony has been the library’s voice on the Telephone Information Service for over 10 years. As Tony leaves us to embark on his travels we thank him for the many years he has given the Foundation.

Bon voyage Tony.

Trial of food magazines

The magazine, Healthy Options, recently ceased publication and we replaced this with Healthy Food Guide. Now we are reviewing Cuisine magazine and have recorded Taste and Dish magazines. We can only have one of these three food magazines and it is up to the Library borrowers to choose which one they most want to read. Please contact the Library and tell us your preference.

Many thanks to our generous sponsors

We would like to express our appreciation to the people and organisations that have kindly sponsored books for the Library since the previous issue of Sound and Touch. These funds have helped to make print material accessible to blind and vision-impaired people and without their generous support it would not be possible to add new titles into our Library. We also pay special thanks to the Royal National Institute of Blind People who donated money to the Library after the Christchurch earthquakes.

Many thanks to the following sponsors for:

  • Ms Anna Macdonald for Jan's dash: an inspiration against all odds by Raewyn Weller.
  • Penrose Charitable Trust No. 2 for As the earth turns silver: a novel by Alison Wong, Access road by Maurice Gee and The night book by Charlotte Grimshaw.
  • Vivien Ward for The life and times of a brown paper bag by Kevin Milne.
  • Altrusa Club of Tauranga for Loving all of it: eminent New Zealanders write about growing old edited by Gordon McLauchlan.
  • Taumaranui Opportunity Shop for Cat amongst the pigeons: a memoir by Cath Tizard.
