Instructions for the DAISY digital player

Welcome to the Plextor PTX1 DAISY Player and to reading audio books on DAISY compact disk (CD).

image of the Plextalk DAISY player

The word DAISY is an acronym for Digital Accessible Information System and when a book is produced in DAISY format it enables the reader to navigate around the book.

This player will also play commercial audio books on CD such as those you borrow from the public library, music CDs and Mp3 files. However you cannot play DAISY CDs on a regular CD or Mp3 player.

These instructions are in two parts. Side 1 explains how to use the player in Simple Mode with the mask attached and Side 2 explains how to take the mask off, put the player into Advanced Mode and use the new keys that are exposed and the navigation features.

If at any time while you are learning to use the player you have problems or questions please phone the library on 0800 24 33 33 option 2 or Auckland 355 6969.

Safety instructions

This player is an electrical appliance and should be used with the same caution that applies to other household electrical appliances.

Observing the following safety precautions will protect the player and yourself. If the player appears to be malfunctioning please turn it off immediately and contact the library. Do not attempt to repair it yourself.

  • The player should be kept on a flat firm surface such as a table top.
  • Keep the player away from heat sources, such as direct sunlight and heaters.
  • Keep the player away from liquids and ensure your hands are dry when you remove the power plug.
  • The player has a special rechargeable battery that can only be replaced by the library. Do not attempt to replace it yourself.
  • If you plug the player into the same power board as other electrical equipment such as TVs or radios you may experience some noise disruption.

Cleaning instructions

Always disconnect the power cord from the socket before cleaning the player.

Wipe dust and dirt from the player using a soft damp cloth, and then wipe it with a clean dry cloth.

Getting started

The box you have opened should contain the following:

  • The player with its mask on.
  • A power cord in two parts which should be joined together.
  • A 2 track cassette with these instructions on it which you can use in your talking book machine or own cassette player.

When you unpack this player it will be covered by a "mask" which will prevent you from accessing some of the keys. Please do not take the mask off just yet. We would like you to first learn to use the player with the mask on and then later, if you wish, take the mask off.

Becoming familiar with the player

Please remove the player from the box, place it on a firm flat surface and run your hands over it.

The bottom of the player has a flat surface.

The top or face of the player has keys on it as well as the player's speaker which is in the top right hand corner.

The CD slot

This is in the front of the player and should be facing towards you.

The lip of the CD slot is made from a plastic that is flexible and has a rubbery feel.

Play/stop & information key

Above the CD slot you will feel a round indentation. This is just below the play/stop key and will lead you up to it. The play/stop key is a rectangular key with a depression in the middle. This key is also used as the information key.

Forward and rewind

On either side of the play/stop key are 2 half circle keys. The left hand one is the rewind key and the right hand one is the forward key.

I am now going to guide you around the player moving in an anti-clockwise direction.

Title select

To the right of the forward key are the title select keys which are two arrow shaped keys facing away from each other. These keys allow you to move between the different books on the CD. The title select keys also allow you to select different media options which I will explain later.

CD eject key

To the right of the title select keys is the CD eject key. It is a small square depressed key.

On/off button

Above the CD eject key is the circular on/off button which is slightly indented.
If you move your finger to the right of this button you will feel a small groove on the surface of the player, this groove will help you to locate the on/off button.

Sleep timer

The sleep timer is a small round button directly above the on/off button. When the sleep timer is set it turns the player off after the selected period of time.

Speaker

The speaker is in the top right hand corner above the sleep timer. It is a large circle and you will feel its corrugated grill.

Volume

Moving to the left from the speaker you will find two half oval volume keys.

Tapping the top key will increase the volume. Tapping the bottom key will decrease the volume. Pressing both top and bottom keys at the same time will reset the volume to normal.

Tone

The keys to the left of the volume keys are the tone keys. Tapping the top key will make the tone higher and tapping the bottom key will make it lower. Pressing both keys at the same time will reset the tone to normal.

Head phone socket

On the left hand side of the player there are three sockets or holes. The centre socket is the head phone socket. Above this socket on the edge of the player you will feel a small groove. This groove will help you locate the head phone socket.

USB Port

To the back of the head phone socket there is a small rectangular socket for a USB connection. This is only needed if the player is connected to a computer or a memory stick.

Secure Digital Card or SD card slot

To the front of the head phone socket is a slot which will take an SD Card. We will not be supplying you with books on SD Cards.

Power socket

At the back of the player are two holes. The smaller one in the centre of the back is the power inlet socket.

Service technician socket

The square slot beside the power socket is a socket for use by the service technicians. You will not need to use this socket.

Battery

Your player is fitted with an internal rechargeable battery which will last for approximately 5 hours when playing CDs. It will take 4 hours to recharge the battery and you do this by plugging the machine into a house hold power point. When you first receive the player we recommend that you plug it in to a power point and leave it to charge for at least 4 hours.

You can play a CD while it is recharging as long as the player remains plugged in to the power point.

Once the battery is charged and you disconnect the player from the power source you will hear a set of descending tones. When you re-connect it to the power you will hear ascending tones.

When using the player on battery power the player will automatically switch itself off if it has not been operating for 15 minutes.

Power connection

The power cord is in two parts. These two parts should be joined together when you receive the player.

The small round pin on one end of the cord fits in to the power socket at the back of the player and the two pin plug goes in to a power point. Please put the two pin plug into a standard power point and turn the power switch on.

Please note: You must only use the power adaptor or the internal battery provided, to power your player.

You can now turn this cassette off while you plug your player into the wall socket.

Now lets get started using some of the player's features and listening to some audio books.

Turning on the player – the on/off button

Run your hand down the right side of the player face until you feel the groove that leads you to the power on/off button.

You will need to press and hold down the on/off button for a few seconds until you hear a chime.

You will then hear a voice saying "please wait".

You have now turned the player on.

The player will shortly sound a chime and tell you that "There is no disk inserted".

To turn the player off, press and hold the on/off button until the player announces "power off".

(5 second wait here)

Key describer

Find the indentation in the front of the player, above the CD slot. This will lead you to the play/stop key. To either side of the play/stop key are the forward and rewind keys. By pressing both the forward and rewind keys at the same time and holding them down you will turn the key describer on.

Press both these keys now until you hear "key describer on".

(5 second wait here)

Once the key describer is turned on you can press any key and the player will tell you the name and function of that key.

Now you can turn off this cassette while you practice pressing other keys to hear the player describe them.

To turn the key describer off press both forward and rewind together again.

To continue with these instructions turn the key describer off.

Insert a CD

Remove the CD from its cardboard packet. Do not dispose of the cardboard packet because you will need this to return your CD to the library.

On one side of the CD about 1 cm away from the hole in the centre you should be able to feel a circular ridge. This ridge is on the bottom side of the CD and this side must face downwards when you insert the CD.

(3 second wait here)

Place the CD into the slot and gently push it until the player catches it and automatically takes it the rest of the way.

Once the player has accepted the CD it will chime and then say "disk audio" or "disk DAISY title".

The player will then say the name of the first book or the magazine.

If a CD is inserted upside down, the player will say "damaged or improper disc" and will reject the CD.

Play the CD

Find the indentation on the front of the player, above the CD slot. This will lead you to the play/stop key.

Tap this key once to start the CD playing. Tap it again to stop playing. The player will remember exactly where you stopped.

The player will remember the last place you stopped on every book and magazine on the CD even if you eject the CD.

Now turn off this cassette while you listen to the narration for a short time.

Title select

The title select keys are the arrow shaped keys to the right of the forward key. These are the keys you use to find out what is on your CD.

If you tap the right side pointed edge of these keys this will move you forward through the titles on the CD. By tapping the left pointed edge of these keys this will move you back through the titles on the CD.

When you want to play the book that you have selected tap the play/stop key.

When you tap the play/stop again the narration will stop. The player will remember the place the narration stopped regardless of whether you eject the CD or start listening to another book on the CD. Once you return to the book the narration will start where you previously stopped.

Turn off this cassette while you practice moving between the titles.

Media select

These are the same keys as the title select and are to the right of the forward key.

Tapping both of the title select keys in the centre enables you to select different media. This player is able to play audio books on CDs, on a memory stick or downloaded from a computer. It also has an internal memory that will hold books. This is what is meant by different media.

Try tapping the title select keys in the centre, several times to see what happens.

Now turn off this cassette while you try this.

Information key

If tapped once the play/stop key will turn the narration on and off but if pressed and held down it will activate the information function.

When you have a CD in the player but have not selected a book, the player will tell you how many titles are on the CD.

When you are part way through a book and you activate the information key the player will tell you how long you have been listening to that particular book as well as information about the player such as how much battery charge is left.

To turn off the information key on press the play/stop key.

Turn off this cassette while you press and hold down the play/stop key and listen to that information.

Forward and rewind

The forward and rewind keys perform two functions. If tapped once they will skip forward or back to the next section or heading of the recording. If pressed and held down they perform the normal rewind or fast forward function. If you continue to hold down the keys the player will skip 1 minute, 5 minutes, 10 minutes. After this if you let the fast forward or rewind key go it will continue to skip forward or backwards until the play/stop key is pressed.

Turn off this cassette while you practice moving around in the book by using the forward and rewind keys.

Sleep timer

The sleep timer is above the on/off button and below the speaker. This button stops the player after the selected time. By tapping the button once you will set the timer for 15 minutes, twice for 30 minutes, three times for 45 minutes and four times for 1 hour. The fifth tap turns the sleep timer off.

If you want to know how long before the player turns off you can tap the timer once and it will tell you the time left.

Turn off this cassette and try using the sleep timer key.

Volume and tone

The volume and tone keys are in the top left hand corner. The tone keys are the smaller ones on the left.

Turn off this cassette while you practice adjusting the volume and tone as you listen to the narration.

Eject the CD

Tap the play/stop key to stop the narration and eject the CD using the CD Eject key which is below the power on/off button in the bottom right hand corner.

Turn off this cassette while you do this.

That is the end of the instructions for using the player with the mask on and in simple mode.

We suggest that you practice using the player like this until you are very familiar with all the functions. If you have any problems please call the library on 0800 24 33 33 option 2 or Auckland 355 6969 and the staff will help you.

Once you have mastered using the player in simple mode you may then like to forward this cassette to the end and then turn it over to listen to the instructions for using the player without the mask and in advanced mode.

Instructions for using the PTX1 player without the mask and in advanced mode.

Congratulations you have mastered using the player with the mask on and are now confident about taking the mask off and accessing the advanced features.

When the mask is removed more keys are exposed and these enable access to the DAISY navigation features. To activate these features you will need to change the player into "Advanced" mode and I will explain how to do this shortly.

DAISY audio books are structured in a similar way to print books.

This structure allows the reader to move or "navigate" around the book or magazine.

For example a DAISY book may contain two levels of structure. Level 1 could be the sections or parts of the book and Level 2 could be the chapters. Another DAISY book could have three levels of structure. Level 1 could be the sections or headings, Level 2, the pages and Level 3 phrases.

Removing the mask

To remove the mask find the two clips on either side of the player near the front. Pull both clips out, away from the player, and at the same time pull the mask upwards. This can be quite difficult to do.

Remove the CD

If you have a CD in the player please remove it before you proceed.

Your player needs to be turned off before you start.

We will use the play/stop key as our starting point to locate and describe the new keys.

Number key pad

Directly above the play/stop key is a group of 12 keys in the same formation as a telephone key pad. The number 5 key has a small raised dot in the centre.

Changing the mode from simple to advanced

Hold down the 5 key at the same time as pressing the power on/off button. When you hear "Please wait" and a chime you may release your finger off the power button but continue to hold down the 5 key. After about 20 seconds you will hear "advanced mode". You have now activated the advanced settings.
Try this now.

Wait for 20 seconds.

Navigation keys

Some of the number keys have two functions; they act as number keys but also as navigation keys.

The 2 and 8 keys which are above and below the 5 will allow you to scroll or navigate up and down through the levels of the book for example moving from the chapter level to the page level.

Wait for 5 seconds.

The 4 and 6 keys which are to the left and right of the 5 key will allow you to navigate backwards and forwards along the levels that you have selected using the 2 and 8 keys for examaple skipping from chapter to chapter or from page to page.

Wait for 5 seconds.

The key in the middle of the bottom row is the zero key and on the left of it is the "star" key which will cancel or undo your previous action. From now on we will call this the "cancel" key. To the right of zero is the "hash" or "enter" key which will enter or confirm your previous action. From now on we will call this the "enter" key.

The 9 key is used to "move" or copy a book from the CD into the internal memory of the player.

Information key

This angled key, to the right of number six on the key pad, gives you information about the book such as the time that has lapsed and the length of time before the book is finished. If held down for a few seconds it will also tell you the date and time.

With the mask on you held down the play/stop key to get to information but now you also have a separate information key.

There are 4 keys to the left side of the number pad.

Starting at the bottom closest to the rewind key we have:

The bookmark key

The bookmark key is a triangular shaped key, to the left of the rewind key, which allows you to mark a place in the book that you want to return to later. It performs three functions.

Tap the book mark key once for Go to bookmark

Tap the bookmark key twice to add book mark

Tap the bookmark key three times to remove the bookmark

Tap the bookmark key four times to get out of the bookmark function

You do not need to mark the place in the book each time you finish reading because the player will remember your place. It will remember your place in each of the titles on your multi-title CD. The bookmark key is best used when you want to mark multiple places in the same book or magazine.

Go to key

This diamond shaped key is above the bookmark key and depending on the levels of structure in the book; you use this key to go to a particular page or heading in the book.

Bookshelf key

Another diamond shaped key above the Go to key. This key has no function at present and is not used with CDs but will be activated in the future.

Key describer/menu key

This oval key sits above the bookshelf key and is the topmost key on the left of the player face.

If you tap this key you will hear "menu".

This leads you in to a technical menu. You do not need to access the "menu" to use the player. The Menu allows access to some of the more advanced functions which I will describe later. Should you accidentally activate the menu function simply tap the key again to turn it off.

Wait for 5 seconds.

If you press and hold down the key describer/menu key you will hear "key describer on" When you then press any key the player will tell you the name and function of that key.

When you had the mask on and the player was in simple mode you held down the forward and rewind keys to get to the "key describer" so this has now changed.

You can turn off this cassette while you activate the key describer and press the new keys that have been exposed and listen to their functions

Key lock

To lock the keys press the forward and rewind keys at the same time and hold them down until you hear "key lock on". To turn the lock off you press the same two keys and hold them down again. In "simple mode" holding down these two keys gave you key describer, so this has now changed.

Speed keys

These sit to the right of the volume keys. The top key increases the speed of the narration and the bottom key decreases it. Pressing both keys at the same time will reset the speed to normal.

Insert a CD

Wait for it to load.

Wait for 5 seconds.

Title select

Using the title select keys find a title that you would like to listen to or go back to one of the titles that you have already started.

Wait for 5 seconds.

Using the navigation features

Using the 2 or 8 keys find the levels of structure in the title you have chosen.

See if you can find the chapter level.

Using the 4 and 6 keys see if you can move along the chapters listening to a few seconds at the beginning of each chapter.

You may wish to turn off this cassette while you practice using the navigation keys.

Placing a bookmark

This player allows you to have up to 1,000 bookmarks per book.

Find the bookmark key which is to the left of the rewind key.

Find a place in the book that you would like to go back to later.

Tap the bookmark key twice and you will hear "add bookmark".

Now give your bookmark the number 1 by ing that key on the number pad followed by the "enter" key.

The player will say "bookmark 1 added."

You can put in multiple bookmarks and assign them different numbers and you can use the same numbers for bookmarks in different books.

You may wish to turn off this cassette while you practice putting in a bookmark.

Go to bookmark

Now you can go back to the marked place by tapping the bookmark key and when you hear "Go to bookmark" put in the number that you have given to the bookmark.

You may wish to turn off this cassette while you practice finding your bookmarks again.

Removing a bookmark

Tap the bookmark key until you hear "remove bookmark".

Enter the number of the bookmark that you wish to delete and then tap enter or the hash key to confirm.

Press 0 followed by enter to delete all of the bookmarks.

You may wish to turn off this cassette while you practice removing a bookmark.

Go to

Just above the bookmark key is the "go to" key. Tap once and you will hear "go to page", tap twice and you will hear "go to heading". Then put in the number of the page or heading that you wish to move to and tap enter or the hash key. The book will begin playing at the beginning of that page or heading.

Depending on the way the DAISY book is structured you may hear the words album and track used instead of page and heading. Sometimes page numbers haven't been included and the player will say "does not exist".

You may wish to turn off this cassette while you practice using the "go to" function.

Menu

Navigating the menu structure is similar to navigating through a book. You use 4 or 6 to move forwards and backwards along the levels and 2 and 8 to move up and down in the menu structure.

Copying a book to the internal memory

Select the book on your CD that you wish to transfer and then tap the 9 key. The player will announce "You are about to move the selected title to the internal memory are you sure?"

Tap the enter or the hash key to confirm.

The player waiting chime will sound while the move is in progress. Depending on the length of the book this could take 3 or 4 minutes. When finished the player will announce "Move has been completed".

If you don't want to copy the book tap the star key to the left of zero to cancel.

The internal memory of the player can hold 2 Gigabytes of data. This is about

120 hours of listening.

If you wish to transfer selected titles or content to the memory from a SD card or a USB memory stick press both title select keys together until you have found that media and then use the same steps described above. Please be aware that when you move books from media other than CD you may delete the book from your original source.

Deleting a title from the memory of the player

If you have a CD in the player remove it now.

Using the left or right title select keys tap along until you find the title you wish to delete.

Press the menu key and then the 4 or 6 keys to move along the options until you reach "media management". Press the enter or hash key to select this option.

Now use the 4 and 6 keys to move through the options until you reach "delete selected title". Press the enter key to confirm. The player will ask "are you sure" press the hash or enter key to confirm.

After a few seconds the player will announce "deleted".

You may wish to turn off this cassette while you practice copying a book to the internal memory and then deleting it from the memory. (The book will still remain on the CD).

Setting the date and time

Check the current date and time by pressing and holding down the information key.

Tap the menu key and using the 4 or 6 keys move along the options.

Select "system settings" and then confirm using the enter or hash key.

Use the 4 or 6 keys again to move along the options until you hear "set the date and time." Tap enter to confirm.

Use the number pad to put in the current year with 4 digits and then tap enter or just tap enter to accept the current setting.

The player will then ask you to enter the month or to confirm the current month. To input the month put in the 2 digit number of the current month, for example March is 03. Once you have done this you will be asked to input the day and time using a 4 digit number, for example. 9.45 is 0945. Then use the fast forward and rewind key to select am or pm.

Once the day and time have been set correctly the player will automatically exit this feature and confirm your entry by speaking the date and time back to you.

If you decide not to set the date and time the 2 or the star key will cancel this setting. If you put in an incorrect number during the process you can use the cancel key to delete it.

When you enter numeric input you can use the enter and cancel keys to confirm or cancel your entry.

You can also use the menu option to select your preferred text to speech voice and customize some other features. If you wish to do these see if you can work out how to do it and if not contact the library staff for help.

That is the end of the instructions for using the player in advanced mode without the mask. We hope you enjoy using these advanced features and if you have any problems or concerns please call the library on 0800 24 33 33 option 2 or Auckland 355 6969.
