Instructions for searching the catalogue using JAWs

Start your web browser.

  • Press alt + d to access the address bar, and type the address of the Foundation website: www.rnzfb.org.nz
  • Bring up the list of links on the page (Insert + F7), and press "A" until "about" is announced and press enter.
  • Once the page is reloaded, bring up the links list again, and press "L" until Library is announced and press enter.
  • At this point you could conduct a basic search, but advanced search provides better results. Bring up the links list and press "A" until advanced search is announced and press enter.
  • Depending on your version of JAWS, you may automatically enter into "forms mode" if so go to the next step. Otherwise press control + home to go to the top of the page, then "F" to go to the first field of the advanced search. Press enter to access forms mode. Depending on your JAWS version it will either say "forms mode on", or make a sound effect.
  • When in forms mode you can fill out the fields of the search as required, pressing the "tab" key takes you to the next field in the search form. "Edit boxes" can be filled out by entering the desired text into the field. "Combo boxes" Contain a number of preset options, to select one press "Alt + down arrow" to open the box, then arrow up or down to select the desired option. Tabbing once more selects the option and moves to the next field.
  • When all desired fields are complete, pressing enter on the "search" button will launch the search.
  • When the page is loaded, press the "1" on your number row, this will move the focus to the title of the results section – "Library catalogue".
  • You can then down arrow through the results of the search, if there is more than one page of results, pressing enter on the "next 10 results" link will bring up the next page of results. Proceed as above until all results are viewed.
  • If more information is desired, activating the link that is the title of the book will move to a screen of more information. From this screen links are available to go back to "search results", generate a "new search", or go to "detailed record" to get more information, including a plot synopsis.
