Eye Conditions
In New Zealand around 35% of vision loss is preventable.
The five main causes of vision loss are age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma, retinitis pigmentosa, cataracts and diabetic retinopathy. The images on this page give an idea of how someone with these eye conditions might see a dog.
Getting regular eye tests is one of the best ways of preventing vision loss from eye disease. And in many cases, early detection and regular monitoring has meant further vision loss is prevented.
The RNZFB supports the NZ Association of Optometrists' recommendation of eye tests every two years. More often if there is a family history of eye conditions.
Don't accept failing eyesight with age - you should always know the cause. Any change in your vision should be checked.
Eye condition booklets
The RNZFB has produced a series of eye condition information books
