Electronic text

E-text files are electronic files that are accessible to blind and partially sighted people.

We use three standard file formats for our e-text documents:

  • Word files (.doc)
  • HTML files (.html)
  • Plain text files (.txt)

In special circumstances other formats may be used (for example, an accessible form may be produced in pdf format).

E-text files always contain accessible text and may also contain a number of other features, including information on textual structures (such as heading levels, bold words, tables) and verbalisations of diagrams and other visual features.

Members typically access e-text files using a screen reader. Screen readers recognise HTML tags and Word styles and use these to allow the user to navigate around the document and to provide the user with information about heading levels and other textual features.

Find out about other accessible formats including braille, audio and large print.
