DAISY
DAISY books are electronic files that synchronise text with audio files and improve navigation within a digital book.
A DAISY book consists of a set of digital files that include:
- Digital audio files (such as .wav or .mp3) containing human narration or synthetic speech of part or all of the text
- A marked-up .html file containing some or all of the text
- Synchronization files to relate markings in the text file with time points in the audio file
- A navigation control file which enables the user to move smoothly between files while synchronization between text and audio is maintained.
We produce two types of DAISY books: an NCC only book and a full-text book.
- For full-text books, the entire text is included in the .html file and every paragraph is synchronised with an audio file.
- In contrast, for NCC only books only major headings are included in the .html file and synchronised with the audio files.
For more information on how users benefit from DAISY books and to find out about the options for playing DAISY books, please read about our transition to digital audio books.
Standards are set internationally by the DAISY Consortium. We also collaborate with the New Zealand Electronic Text Centre to increase access to historic New Zealand texts.
