Become a breeding stock guardian
A small percentage of guide dogs that excel in key areas of selection are chosen to parent the next generation of guide dogs. These dogs are usually about 12-18 months old when they graduate onto the breeding programme.
Breeding stock guardians take responsibility for providing a family home for one of these dogs, caring for it and making it available for guide dog programme requirements.
To become a breeding stock guardian you will:
- Have to be able to regularly visit our guide dog centre in South Auckland.
- Commit to looking after the dog for its whole life.
- Have a fully fenced, dog-safe property.
- Be able to regularly exercise for the dog for an hour a day, or about 25 kilometres a week.
- Preferably work no more than 15 hours a week or be able to take the dog to work with you.
- Have experience with dogs.
Volunteers find it rewarding to follow the progress of their dog's litters through the years.
Once you have been accepted and given a dog to care for, the RNZFB's Guide Dog Services will continue to support you by:
- Checking in with you monthly.
- Providing food, equipment and veterinary care (including worming and vaccinations).
- Registering your dog through Manukau City Council.
- Providing a boarding service if you go on holiday and can't take your dog with you.
When the dog is retired the guardian will usually have the option of adopting the dog.
