Sight loss won't stop Adam

Adam is 14-years-old and partially sighted. He is supported by a range of services from the Royal New Zealand Foundation of the Blind (RNZFB), including orientation and mobility training, attending recreation camps and reading talking books from the library.

Adam at RNZFB recreation camp

Adam goes to a mainstream school where uses a laptop and has a teacher aide to help him out. He has also been on an adaptive technology course run through the RNZFB which has helped him create animations and games on the computer in his spare time.

Adam really enjoys the RNZFB recreation camps and has been on several already. He has experienced a broad spectrum of exciting activities like rock climbing, abseiling, archery, kayaking and going down the mud slide. In fact, he can't pick a favourite activity because he has loved giving everything a go!

One of the camp volunteers says Adam really thrived in some of the more challenging activities like the confidence course, where the kids climbed up a tall fence post and had to jump off the top: "Adam really went for it. He shot up there so fast – even the wobbling of the pole at the top didn't deter him!"

Adam says, "The camps have been so much fun and they've really helped me build confidence".
