New Board Directors announced for RNZFB

Media release

11 November 2011

The Royal New Zealand Foundation of the Blind (RNZFB) congratulates its three new Board directors for their success, after the election announcement at its Annual General Meeting on 5 November.

Members voted in Linda Beck, who is returning after a year’s absence, Dr Neville Bennett, as a re-elected director, and Dr Greg Morgan, as a new director.

“I hope the next three years provide each of these directors with positive experiences that fully meet their expectations as a director of the RNZFB,” says Geraldine Glanville, RNZFB Board Chair.

Linda Beck is a lawyer working with the Canterbury Community Law Centre to set up a Disability Law Service. She has previously worked for the State Services Commission, the Ministry of Women’s Affairs, and the Human Rights Commission. Linda has also been a board member of the Association of Blind Citizerns, NZ Disabled Persons Assembly and a Ministerial appointee to an ACC National Advisory Panel. She has a PhD in law having studied the operation of the Employment Tribunal. Linda is a full member of the RNZFB.

Dr Neville Bennett was elected to the Board in 2003 and is chair of the Audit Committee. He holds a PhD from the London School of Economics and taught at Canterbury University before retirement. He is a weekly columnist for the National Business Review and a Trustee of New Zealand Universities Superannuation. Neville has broad experience in local government and environmental concerns.

Dr Greg Morgan has been involved with the RNZFB since the 1970s, first as a volunteer, then from 2000 to 2005 as library manager and as research and policy manager. He currently holds a senior management role in a large public library. Greg has also worked in university libraries and in community development; he has served on two other boards in the voluntary and disability sectors. Greg is an associate member of the Association of Blind Citizens NZ (Inc.).

Since 2002, the RNZFB has been directly governed by its members, who elect the Board of Directors. The Board of Directors’ key role is governance, focusing on strategic issues such as the RNZFB’s purpose and direction.

The Board may have up to eleven Directors. The blind, deafblind and partially sighted membership elects eight of these, associate members elect one, and the remaining two Directors may be co-opted to the Board for their specific skills or experience. Directors serve for a term of three years.
