Local hero

Congratulations to RNZFB member Jim Morunga, who was named Local Hero, at the Kiwibank New Zealander of the Year awards.

The award paid tribute to Mr Morunga's work with disabled Maori and his advocacy for guide dogs for the blind in Maori and Pacific Island communities. He has also had huge impact as co-ordinator of the Kia Piki te Ora Suicide Prevention programme.

Blinded at the age of 22, he vowed not to let his blindness prevent him from doing his bit for the community. In Napier, he made established the Jay-Em Trust to provide employment and training opportunities for young people, the Maraenui Community Trust, and the Maraenui Rugby Club (now the Maraenui Rugby and Sports Association). He was also president of national blind support group Ngati Kapo.
