Bionic glasses

A scientist has developed the first pair of bionic glasses that could help people with sight impairments to see.

The glasses use tiny cameras, software technology and LED lights to alert the wearer to surrounding objects, including their distance and dimension.

Over the next six months Dr Stephen Hicks, a research associate at Oxford University, will trial the prototypes on 60 blind people. He says the glasses would be ideal for people with macular degeneration, who see objects as a blur but cannot focus, see much colour or make out specifics.
