Recreation and support

We offer many recreational activities and a peer support service to support blind and partially sighted people members physically, socially and psychologically.

Recreation

Our recreation advisors provide information and advice to so members can participate in all kinds of recreational activities. We also work with students to coordinate national, local or island-specific peer support activities.

Some of our sports programmes include: Outward Bound, camps, horse treks, career adventure workshops, walking groups, ski programmes, tramps, handcrafts, St John's, or rock climbing. Members also enjoy more leisurely activities such as card games, scrabble, sewing, pottery and music. Find out what recreation events are currently available.

Our recreation advisors are based in Auckland, Wellington, Tauranga, Palmerston North, Christchurch and Dunedin. We also offer a holiday home in Tauranga that members hire at a special rate.

Peer support

We offer a peer support service called Telefriend to blind or partially sighted people, their caregivers, family and friends. The service offers talking with others who understand from their own experiences. It offers a caring conversation and is confidential and protected by a code of practice.

Call Telefriend on 0800 100 051. This service is available on weekdays from 1pm to 4pm. Outside these hours, a message can be left and the call is returned.
