Adaptive daily living

Adaptive daily living is the key to everyday life and managing everyday tasks.A person holding different sized New Zealand money

Adapting to life with little or no vision means learning new skills or adapting the way you do things to manage everyday tasks safely and effectively. Whether it's using the automatic teller machine, identifying weeds when gardening, preparing meals or finding that favourite CD, our adaptive daily living instructors assist members to gain confidence and independence by teaching new and adaptive skills that help them continue a wide range of day-to-day activities.

Some skills our instructors teach include:

  • understanding eye conditions
  • using remaining vision effectively
  • maximising the use of all other senses
  • identifying low vision aids and how to use these effectively
  • identifying and managing hazards in the home
  • gardening and meal preparation
  • personal correspondence and banking
  • alternative or adaptive ways to read and write
  • applying makeup, cleaning and many other daily tasks

Instructors also work with members to identify and use equipment to meet their individual needs and enable them to competently complete specific tasks of personal choice. We also offer developmental adaptive daily living assistance for everyday activities undertaken by blind or partially sighted children and young people from birth to the age of 21.
