Employer awareness
We are committed to broadening employers' awareness of the benefits of employing a blind or partially sighted person.
Although blind and partially sighted job seekers have one of the highest unemployment rates in New Zealand, we estimate they are employed in approximately 80 different industries, from the farm to the Board. Blind and partially sighted people work in administration, banking, customer service, education, finance, government agencies, health, law, manufacturing and sales.
Our employer awareness team covers general blindness awareness training and employer-specific training.Tips include:
- understanding the untapped labour market of blind and partially sighted workers
- dispelling the myths around what blind and partially sighted workers are capable of
- accessing financial and practical assistance that is available to the employer and the employee
- benefiting from having a blind or partially sighted person in your workplace.
Employer awareness training is available to employers who have employed or are considering employing a blind, deafblind or partially sighted person. Information and advice is also available to employers who would like to learn more about the important role they can play in assisting blind and partially sighted people to gain meaningful employment.
